Quiz: What is the First Word of the Gospel?

Christ’s and His apostles command to “repent” was the very first word of the Gospel, that is, the literal first word of the Gospel and without which no man can be saved (Lk. 13:3, 5) …. here are the references to go look up and read so you are not just following a man but getting deep into God’s Word for yourself as He commands us to do:

  • Matthew 3:2, 4:17
  • Acts 2:38, 3:19; 17:30

Learn God’s Word beloved. Open your King James Bible and read blessed friend. Nothing else will suffice. Get more of Jesus by getting into His Word so His Word gets into you.

“Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts.” Jeremiah 15:16 (KJV)

Does Sin Begin on the Inside or Outside?

Does sin come from the external or internal? – “And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.” Mark 7:20-23 (KJV)

Jesus tells us here that sin emanates “from within.” (Mark 7:21) All sin begins inside of the sinful hearts of men – “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust (in his heart), and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” James 1:13-15 (KJV)

Stedfast and Growing in God’s Grace

Lawrence Jordan writes:

“Compromise of the truth will open the door wide to the spirit of anti-Christ to deceive you. Do not let anyone seduce you with a false unity or a false love. DO NOT COMPROMISE THE TRUTH SAINTS PLEASE! I don’t want to see you fall into apostasy. The great falling away is happening before our eyes (See 2 Thess 2:3 ). We Must Abide in Christ The Vine,The Rock !!!”

Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. 18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” 2 Peter 3:17-18

The abiding saint is not falling from his stedfastness but rather growing in the grace of God through an ever-deepening oneness with Jesus Christ (John 17; Philippians 3:10).

“And Such Like”

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Galatians 5:19-21

“and such like” takes in anything that is principally attached to the 17 sins Paul had just listed that are soul-damning sins.

“Be Ready Always to Give an Answer”

Being Prepared

That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.” Philemon 1:6 (KJV)

Any person who is not getting their information about the one true God from any other source than His Word, is deceived.  Those who grab from this and that place, are making up their own religion as they craft a false god in their own depraved image, one who suits their own lifestyle with no need to “repent ye,  and believe the Gospel.” (Mark 1:15)

I met such a lady this weekend while eating breakfast. She engaged me in a conversation about other things and then God. This lady was highly educated but it was education from this evil world system (Galatians 1:4). She was born and raised to Christian parents and grandparents but has made a religion out of questioning everything and not settling or believing anything. She is flapping in the wind. This lady was playing the fence the whole time, saying that she believed the Gospel message as I quoted several verses verbatim. Then she says that muslims have it right too and every other religion is right also. Though she squirmed, I purposely cornered her with the plain truth of Holy Scripture and her own need to repent and believe Christ at His Word or she will perish in hell. She clearly called the Son of God a liar on many occasions by contradicting what He plainly stated. As usual, I firmly showed here this evil even though she denied calling Christ a liar. The law, some of the 10 commandments were given to her. By God’s grace the administration was firmly the divine truth of Holy Writ and in His love. I told her that she can call the Son of God a liar if she wished and will be judged for it, but I was not going to join her in this rebellion.

I told this lady that she was making up her own religion and has formed a god in her image because she has rejected the Word/record of the LORD.

The “record” of Christ’s coming, living a sinless life, going to that cross, dying, being buried, and raised again 3 days later has been given to all men. Anyone who rejects “the record God gave of his Son,” cannot be saved. He/she has openly rejected Jesus and eternal hell is certain.

“He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” 1 John 5:10-12

If we are truly His Bride, purifying ourselves before Him, He is sanctified in our hearts and we desire to minister His truth and love to others.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” 1 Peter 3:15

May our LORD open doors this week for each of to be used of Him to speak His truth into the hearts of men.

Here are some of the verses of Scripture you must memorize in order to “be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” (1 Peter 3:15)

He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.” John 5:23 (KJV)

“Jesus saith unto him, I am THE (not a way) way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6 (KJV)

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name (JESUS) under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 (KJV) – no one can be saved outside of the name/Person/authority of Jesus Christ, the nail-scarred risen LORD and Savior.

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;.” 1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV)

If God and other people truly matter to us, we will diligently prepare ourselves to answer them the words of truth.

How can any true believer vainly imagine that they are ready to communicate the truth to anyone when they are not diligently communicating that same divine truth to themselves daily in reading, memorizing, and meditating upon the Holy Scriptures?

Write these blessed Bible verses on index cards with their reference and begin memorizing.

There is simply no substitute for the memorization of Holy Scripture. That will never happen by accident but only by a deliberate decision to put God first by filling our minds and hearts with His precious Precepts. “Let thine heart RETAIN my words.” (Proverbs 4:4)

“I have the Word of God and listen to it day and night and have for years and it’s amazing how when a false teaching comes forth that Scriptures just flood into my mind that contradict what is false.  The same false teachings I believed for years are now clearly seen as false and dangerous.” Unknown

Are You Real or Counterfeit?

The enemy’s attacks are ferocious and yet, the most unfathomable dilemma those called to serve full-time face is not satan’s attacks but rather the unspeakable attack of the lack of giving by those who call themselves the body of Jesus Christ.

“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

People who don’t give don’t give because they have not given their lives to the One who gave all. Those who daily give their life to Christ, daily give Him all they have in their care. They serve Him “in deed and in truth” and not just hypocritical lip service.

Jordan Atchison writes:

“They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. {Titus 1:16} This scripture is telling every Christian that we should put more emphasis on our actions, than we do on professing we love God. It’s one thing to say we love God, but it’s another thing to love God with our actions. Don’t be fooled by the masses who claim they believe.”

This is the Bible truth. Let’s look at the giving or lack thereof of those claiming to be following Jesus. People claiming to be Christians while spending more money on frivolous foolishness than helping other believers and the work of Christ are serious bankrupt spiritually.  The person claiming to be a follower in the Son of God who came to lay down His very life who doesn’t give into the work of the Gospel, is seriously deceived. Get mad if you wish. You need to get mad at yourself if this fits you and repent and amend your ways before it’s too late. People who do not give of the resources God has placed into their hands will answer to Him. Those who don’t give to help other believers because they have nothing left over after pampering themselves with every unnecessary thing under the sun, are going to answer to the One who gave his very life blood. Those who claim to be following Him and  don’t help the work of Jesus and yet find all the ability in the world to waste money on non-eternal things, are in big trouble spiritually. This is simply bad fruit. It is unfathomable how people could care less about other believers being edified and taught and the lost being won!  Many are full of excess and spend money on junk food and junk drink, cable TV/ satellite to pipe filth into their homes and the minds of their families and give nothing to help Christ’s Gospel work.

OSAS Question (Once Saved Always Saved?)

Message from OSAS Adherent:

Correct me if I am wrong…I am totally open to the correct interpretation…if it is by grace that we are saved, and that not of ourselves, so man can boast…God initiates… and “He is able to keep us from stumbling, And present us faultless Before the presence of His glory with … See More exceeding joy,”…if He is able, and willing…why wouldn’t He??? Yes, we need to abide in the Vine…but all in all, with God in control…is it not “finished?”

Response:

Please read and acknowledge the whole counsel of God or you will continue to miss the mark in your understanding. Saving grace, when truly possessed, teaches us what? See Titus 2:11-12. The false grace teachers refuse to acknowledge that passage. They also refuse that one can fall from grace – Gal. 5:4; Heb. 12:14-15.

Yes it sure is finished, that is HIS part. But what will we do with it? The SAME LORD who said “it is finished” said also “he that endureth to the end shall be saved” and “Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.” (Lk. 13:24) He also promised His very own church to spue or reject from His body any who are found to be “lukewarm” (Rev. 3:14-15) Jesus taught us that if one that in already in Him does not abide or remain in Him, they would be broken off and cast into the fire (of hell) (Jn. 15:5).

“If a man abide (remain) not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.” John 15:6 (KJV)

Testimony of Enlightenment and Deliverance by God’s Word

Here is an example of the blessings that flow from individuals receiving the truth via those disciples who are becoming resourceful in God’s Holy Word.

Recently, a sister in Christ was disturbed and had some false guilt about having told the truth at her job. Her honesty led to her being fired from her position which she held for 13 years. She was fired for being truthful. She had been toiling much when she opened up to a certain follower of Jesus. The disciple she approached to help her had just begun learning and memorizing Proverbs 29:24 which says “Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth (reveals) it not.” This truth, which reveals that it is a sin to withhold or hide the truth, breathed enlightenment into her heart about the situation she had been through. How? By giving her this verse of Scripture he was learning. It was exactly what she needed.

Okay let’s read this verse again and prayerfully seek out the divine wisdom in it.

“Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth (reveals) it not.” Proverbs 29:24

This verse above is speaking of the sin of not letting the truth be known when you have knowledge of such. Now there is a time to let love overlook the multitude of sins also, so may God lead and guide us in His wisdom which is too high for mere man (1 Pet. 4:8).

This verse of truth teaches us that when we hear of a person or persons planning (plotting, premeditating) to do something evil, we are to “bewrayeth” or reveal it and not conceal it. This toiling soul (lady) was being persecuted for telling the truth that she had knowledge of. When she was asked she revealed the truth she had personal knowledge. As a child of God she wanted to do what is right in His eyes. She did not want to lie or obstruct justice so she simply told the truth and was consequently fired for doing so. For weeks she worried with great anxiety till the truth was delivered to her heart and the Son of God made her free (Jn. 8:31-32, 36). – “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free … If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (Jn. 8:31-32, 36)

The certain disciple whom the LORD used to help this lady with His truth had recently written that specific Bible verse on an index card and so was able to be used of the LORD to delivered His Word that made her free. The LORD Jesus be praised for this good work in His daughter’s life! Try it, you’ll like it!

A few days later I saw this same sister and she told me that she had been in distress about getting fired until she saw and learned that verse. That Scripture was the key the LORD wanted to give to her to unlock the truth about her firing. She did no wrong to tell the truth in her specific situation at that job and yet lacked the truth concerning the whole matter which caused great grief in her life. The blessed liberty and peace that divine truth brought to her life was so very obviously – “Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.” (Ps. 119:165)

The Divinity of Jesus Christ, the Eternal Word

“And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.” John 17:5

“And Thomas answered and said unto him (Jesus), My Lord and my God.” John 20:28

Read Philippians 2:5-6 and fill in the blank to complete the Scripture below:

“… Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be

________________________________.” Philippians 2:5, 6 (Jesus Christ is “equal with God” – on the same level – God Almighty.

“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: these three are one.” 1 John 5:7

There are three distinct, divine Persons in the Godhead and they are “one” in substance and unity. 1 John 5:7 makes this clear where the Father, Word, and Holy Ghost are named as the Godhead and are “one.”

Assignment: Write out 1 John 5:7 (KJV) on an index card with Bible reference and memorize it before proceeding.

More Bible verses demonstrating the divinity of Jesus Christ:

“… Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.” 1 John 5:20, 21

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:8

“And the Word (Jesus Christ) was made flesh, and dwelt (pitched His tent) among us.” John 1:14

Assignment: Record Revelation 1:8 (KJV) on an index card with reference and read it aloud worshipfully 10 times.

Turn to Titus 2:13 and complete following verse of Scripture:

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of _________________________________________________.” Titus 2:13

The Christians in Ephesus as Seen in the New Testament

Acts 18-20 record the beginnings of God’s work of salvation among the Ephesians. Then there is the book of Ephesians and then the address of Christ to them in Revelation 2:1-7.

Origins

Read Acts 18:18-20:38 to discover the origins of the local body of saints begun as Christ was preached in the city of Ephesus. In this passage that spans three chapters, there will be several topics of importance:

  • Apollos
  • Aquila and Priscilla
  • The Baptism in the Holy Spirit
  • Miracles
  • Destruction of paraphernalia previously used for witchcraft
  • Riot
  • Eutychus
  • Full-counsel of God’s Word
  • Wolves
  • The Word of God’s grace as our protection

Warning to Last Hour Believers (us)

Read Revelation 2:1-7 three times to see what the LORD Jesus had to say to the Ephesian believers years after their initial salvation. This applies directly to us today. As you read this, note how these believers knew how to discern “false apostles” and yet were being called to “repent” and return to their “first love” and repent, and do the first works.” If they didn’t do such, Jesus laid out how they would reap with this threat: “or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” (Rev. 2:4-5)

Tying Things Together

In Acts 20 Paul addressed the Ephesian elders and instructed them prophetically and with tears that after his “departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.” (Acts 20:29) Then in the verse following, he said:

30Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

31Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

32And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. (Acts 20)

Today this truth cannot possibly be over emphasized. It is only by the LORD Himself and “the word of his grace” than any saved person can endure to the end, escaping sin, Satan, and the multitudes of beguilers and their false teachings.

Later in time (approximately 30 years later), we see Jesus commending (complimenting) this very same Ephesian assembly of saints for discerning deceivers and exposing and ousting them. Here it is in Revelation 2:2:

“I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried (tested) them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars.” Revelation 2:2

This is a key teaching in the Bible and should be learned by every believer. As a sampling, read and cross reference Ezekiel 44:23-24, Ephesians 5:11, and 1 John 4:1-6. See book titled Deceivers & False Prophets Among Us at SafeGuardYourSoul.com.

It is a shame that most people who claim to be saved have never once heard a biblical teaching on the important subject of discernment. This make those who lead them suspect.

Of great importance is Acts 20:20. May God bless us all to have a 20/20 vision – Acts 20:20. And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house.” (Acts 20:20)  Every true under shepherd of the Great Shepherd of the sheep endeavors to learn and teach the full-counsel of God’s holy Word and he doesn’t wait till he is playing church in some so-called “church building.” No, his life with Christ has no geographical boundaries. He is “instant in season and out of season” as he conveys God’s whole truth everywhere he is “Ihave taught you publicly, and from house to house.” (Acts 20:20; 2 Tim. 4:2) The authentic disciple holds back nothing of the divine substance of God’s Word in feeding the LORD’s children so that they can become completely wise, knowledgeable, mature, and spiritually healthy.

In your Bible, cross reference Acts 20:20 and 20:27.

Now, read Acts 20:20-32 three times prayerfully and intently.

Ephesians 4

1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. 8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. 9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. 17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20 But ye have not so learned Christ; 21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. 25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. 26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27 Neither give place to the devil. 28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. 29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:1-32 (KJV)

Drawing Fire

Those who under the leading and empowering of the Holy Spirit, speak the truth of the Gospel, at times send forth a divine rebuke (2 Cor. 2:16; 2 Tim. 4:2; Heb. 4:12). Some are going to react to the conviction and attack His messengers (Gal. 4:16).

Suffering and persecution for Christ come at the hands of the religious and the lost of the world. Knowing this truth will help us from being blindsided (Hos. 4:6; Matt. 22:29). Let us observe from Scripture the two groups of people that persecutions will come from (the religious/church world and the heathen lost).

Finish John 7:7: ____________________ cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.”

As one reference read John 15:24-25 for how persecution arises from those who think they know God and don’t. Reflect upon the ongoing conflict between the King of the kingdom of God and the scribes and Pharisees (Matt. 15; 23; Mk. 7; Jn. 8).  Throughout the NT writings we see that the apostles of our LORD encountered the same opposition to the Gospel. For example, do you remember how that by the power of Jesus Christ Peter and John raised up the lame man at the gate Beautiful? Do you remember the ensuing persecution and how they were commanded to cease preaching in the name of Jesus Christ? (Acts 3-5) Did these servants of Jesus back down? Did they cower? Did they fear God or man?

Acts 4

29And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

30By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.

31And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

32And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

33And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

34Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold.

Instead of backing down, these Holy Spirit filled disciples forged forward, asking the LORD for more power and boldness to preach the name and Gospel of Jesus (Prov. 28:1; Rom. 1:16).

Write out 1 Peter 4:12-14 on an index card and prayerfully read it five times aloud before proceeding.

Preparing to Fellowship

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35 (KJV)

Never go empty handed or empty hearted to fellowship with other Christians. Go to give but Jesus told us that firstly we must receive before we can give (Matt. 10:8). Be constantly filled with God’s Word and Spirit so you can bring the precious treasure of His truth and presence (2 Cor. 4:7; 2 Tim. 4:2). The LORD wants us to be responsible citizens of His holy kingdom and those who diligently seek Him. If we do these things, we will always giving and not free-loading or simply leaching from others. When you go to fellowship with another believer(s), bring your Bible, a humble heart fervently seeking the LORD, and with His love filling you for the brethren. Elevate Jesus as supreme and lift up and edify the brethren above yourself (Phil. 2:3-5). Set yourself aside – “And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” (Col. 3:14) At this time, handwrite out Colossians 3:14 to begin committing it to memory and for personal edification and meditation. Do not proceed until you have these divinely-inspired words committed to memory.

We each need Jesus and the other members of His body need us (1 Cor. 12; Eph. 4). There should be no excuse made for the lack of authentic, New Testament, worshipful participation in seeking the LORD with other members of His body. Before proceeding, read through 1 Corinthians 12-14.

The Command to Fellowship

Hebrew 10

24And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

25Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

It is vital to the spiritual life of every individual believer in Jesus Christ to experience the fellowship of other members of the true body of Christ in the earth – those who worshipfully hold up Christ the Person and His Word as final authority.

Are you fellowshipping with His people? If not, would you like special prayer to be connected with God-fearing saints and to be transformed so you are a blessing, preferring others above yourself as you interact with His body? Beloved, if you are born of God, He has made you a “new creature” in Christ and a member of His beloved body in whom is all His delight (Ps. 16:3; 2 Cor. 5:17-18). You are no longer your own but rather now “bought with a price.” (1 Cor. 6:19-20) Jesus Christ and His body are your identity and this supersedes all other earthly affinities, including familial ties (Matt. 10:35-37; Lk. 9:59-62; 11:27-28; Gal. 3:28; Col. 3:11). As true followers of Jesus, we perpetually have the need of rich, Christ-centered fellowship with His saints. If we lack this vital fellowship, it will greatly hinder our spiritual lives. If you desire prayer for this vital fellowship, please email us at: info@safeguardyoursoul.com

Essential Fellowship

If Jesus returned right this moment, would you be ready? Are you loving Him with all of your heart, mind, and strength and therefore obeying Him by fellowshipping with His true disciples? Those who are truly Christ’s, love and fellowship with His body –We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death (spiritual separation from God).” (1 John 3:14) This passage makes it crystal clear that if I don’t love God’s people, it plainly demonstrates that I am not right with the LORD and am abiding/living in a state of apostasy.

Read 1 Corinthians 13 every day for the next week and ask the Father to show you His love and manifest it increasingly in your life.

The Blessing and Necessity of Christian Fellowship

As an irreplaceable cornerstone priority, our fellowship is first and foremost with God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the divine Person of the Holy Spirit.

“That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” 1 John 1:3

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.” 2 Corinthians 13:14

According to 2 Corinthians 8:5, Jesus’ saints are to “first” submit to the LORD before they are submitted one to another with the members of Christ’s body. If ever submission to other members of the body and/or leaders becomes more important than (takes precedence over) the believer’s submission to the LORD, the sin of idolatry and great error will be the result.

With this in mind, read the entire chapter of John 17 and watch carefully and prayerfully for what our LORD says concerning oneness with Him, His Father, and His body. Do not proceed until you have prayerfully pored over John 17.

The Earliest Believers

Before sin, false teaching, deception, and false prophets began to invade the church, we have a blessed preserved model of what true NT (New Testament) fellowship is to consist of. The simplicity of such should be strived for and preserved at all costs. Christ must be the One worshipped and anything that hinders or draws away the heart affections of His people must be severed. Let’s take a peek into the blessed fellowship of the earliest saints:

Acts 2

41Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

42And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

43And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

44And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

45And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

46And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

47Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Hungry and Thirsty for More of Him

The very first and fittingly foundation statement Jesus made to His own disciples and the masses in the lengthy sermon on the mount, was “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt. 5:3) “Poor in spirit” means to be desperate and spiritually impoverished in spirit. This may seem elementary and yet, nothing can be truly accomplished without being “poor in spirit.” God requires it. In fact, if we are not desperate, hungering, and thirsting in spirit for more of the LORD, we will not be filled by Him and are like those last day lovers of self who, while having a mere “form of godliness,” are “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (2 Tim. 3:7) Learning of the LORD requires more than the accumulation of facts, or a mere outward Christianity. The Word tells us that “God is love” and that love is essential. Without His love in us we are nothing in His kingdom and cannot be used of Him – “Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.” (1 Cor. 8:1; 13:1-8; 1 Jn. 4:8)

The Bible should be approached with a heart that desires more of Him – “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” (Matt. 5:6)

Becoming and remaining hungry for more of the LORD, worshipfully upholding Him as “Head,” is an absolute essential to Christ’s virtue and grace perpetually flowing into our lives and the life of His body (Phil. 4:12; Col. 2:18-19; James 4:6-10). God sets Himself against those who have prideful hearts. He “resisteth the proud but giveth grace to the humble.” (James 4:6) – Read James 4:6-10 closely and prayerfully.

God gave us His Word so we could know and fear Him and not be led astray from Him (Deut. 4:10; Jn. 5:39). In order to learn of Him in the fear of the LORD, we must choose to be genuinely humbled before Him, and when we are, we will be teachable and able to “receive with meekness the engrafted word” which is able to save our souls as we “continueth therein.” (James 1:19-25).

In summation, the LORD should be sought in His Word with the following attributes of heart:

  • The fear of the LORD
  • Humility
  • Delighting in God
  • Pliable, teachable
  • Diligence
  • Sincerity of heart
  • As a babe, with childlike faith
  • Repentance
  • Desirous of Him – Hungering for more of Him
  • Worshipfully
  • Thirsting for Him

Schools in the Bible

The early believers gathered to do at least four things in their corporate worship of the nail-scarred, risen LORD, beginning with continuing “steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrine.” (Acts 2:42-47)  Colossians 3:16-17 speaks of other things to be experienced when two or more gather in Jesus’ holy name, including the instruction to allow the Word of God to dwell in us richly. In part, our gatherings as Christ’s followers, are to consist of learning God’s Word which requires the individual participation of each saint. It is clear that when the first saints assembled,   learning God’s Word was at the center of their worship.  Teaching, studying, and learning God’s written Word was elevated to prominence in the worship times of the earliest believers in Christ and yet now, sound Bible doctrine is downplayed, ignored, shunned, and lost (Amos 8:11; 1 Tim. 1-3; 2 Tim. 2:15; 3:15-17, etc.). God hasn’t changed and His people learning and teaching His Precepts is still of utmost importance to Him. According to the whole counsel of Holy Scripture, we can conclude that any gathering that does not emphasize the personal study and learning of the written Word of God is apostate.

All believers in Jesus Christ are commanded by God to continue “stedfastly in the apostle’s doctrine,” to “study” and “rightly” divide “the word of truth,” to “give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine,” and to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly (abundantly) in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another.” (Col. 3:16; 1 Tim. 4:13; 2 Tim. 2:15) It is commendable that you, the student now reading this, has moved upon the conviction of the Holy Spirit, to pursue the deeper depths and knowledge of the God and Savior who found and saved you.

The apostles taught God’s Word, referred to as “the apostle’s doctrine,” which refers to the teachings the “apostle and high priest of our faith” taught them and then instructed them to teach others (Matt. 28:18-20).

Acts 19:9 speaks of a school the apostle Paul apparently taught at for a time after leaving the local church scene because of the antichrist apostasy and unbelief. – “But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.” (Acts 19:9)

The phrases “company of prophets” and “among the prophets” appears in 1 Samuel 10:5, 10-12 and 19:20, 24. These terms reveal that there was some type of organized learning environment among the prophets in the days of Samuel the prophet of the LORD.

Believers are to be disciples or disciplined followers and students of the LORD, receiving instruction, wisdom, understanding, and nourishment from His holy Word daily. The word “instruction” appears 33 times in God’s Word and refers to learning of Him. Furthermore, Christ instructed us to “Come unto me” and “learn of me.” (Matt. 11:28-29) God expects us to learn of Him – to be taught of Him. The meek will cry out to the LORD to be taught of Him and He promises to teach those who fear Him (Ps. 25:4-5, 9, 11).

The purpose of a school would be to provide a place of concentrated learning and experience in preparation for greater studies and performance in one or more fields of endeavor. The benefits and rewards of such training are manifold and richly bless the lives of those who submit themselves to learn of Christ. God uses people who allow Him to make them “meet (fit, useful) for the master’s use.” (Prov. 22:17-21; 2 Tim. 2:21)

After receiving Jesus Christ as LORD of our lives, we are commanded to be rooted, grounded, built up, and established in Him (Col. 2:6-7).

The need for schooling is underscored by the biblical truth that God requires sanctification and preparation in His people before He uses them (Josh. 3:5; Prov. 24:27; 2 Tim. 2:15, 21; 3:16-17; Heb. 5:11-6:3, etc.). Both sanctification and preparation come by way of His Word and Spirit (Jn. 15:3; 17:17; Eph. 5:25-27; Heb. 5:11-6:3). Servant leaders (elders) in the body of Christ, are set in place by Christ to equip and mature the saints to do the work of the ministry as they discern and expose strange doctrines and speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:11-15). Regrettably, this is rarely seen to be as our LORD would have it and made plain in His Word.

THE SUPREMACY OF JESUS CHRIST

“Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power…Let no man beguile you of your reward…vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.” Colossians 2:8-10, 18-19

Any person, teaching, icon or ritual that robs or intercepts glory from the Person and work of Jesus Christ is of the arch enemy of God and His creation (mankind). The adversary has come “to steal and to kill and to destroy.” (Jn. 8:44, 47; 10:10; Col. 2; 1 Pet. 5:8). According to 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, Satan has his “ministers” and these deceivers are known by whether or not they clearly and fully elevate the divine person of Jesus Christ and His redemptive work and whether they promote or condone any person or teaching that does not clearly elevate Christ as the supreme LORD and the only Savior of depraved sinful mankind (Col. 1-2; Rev. 1:8).

“Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.” Colossians 1:12-20

Jesus Christ is the Redeemer, Creator and Sustainer of all that is (Col. 1:15-17). He is the only Salvation and hope of men and is coming soon (Col. 1:14, 20). This is the message of the book of Colossians. Have you recently studied this rich and invaluable book and mined out its precious truths?

Colossians 2:8-10 warns believers to “Beware” of any “philosophy” or “traditions” that would be elevated above Jesus Christ and supremely  loving Him who is supreme and pre-eminent above all (Isa. 45:21-23). “Educated” men in leadership who do not profoundly elevate Jesus Christ actually boast of such (their academic accomplishments) when they ought to be ashamed that they have actually rebelled and paid good money to be defiled and misled. It is these men that Paul tells us are “deceiving, and being deceived.” (2 Tim. 3:13). A philosophy can be known to be God-honoring or antichrist based on what it ultimately does with the Person and redemption of Jesus Christ. Any religious teaching that does not magnify and glorify Jesus Christ is antichrist and to be exposed as such (Rom. 16:16-18; Col. 2; Jude 3-4).

“(Paul the apostle of Jesus) Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Timothy 1:13-17

The believers at Galatia had allow false teachers who were “accursed” to come in and lead them to count rituals and times and foods (all non-essentials to salvation) to become important and Christ to become demoted (Gal. 1:6-9; 4:9-11).

“O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently (clearly) set forth, crucified among you?” Galatians 3:1

In light of the reigning King of all kings, Maker and LORD of the whole universe, we must ask: Who is the puny pope or the romish religion? Who is Mary whom He made? Who is any Jewish Messianic rabbi? Who is Santa Claus? Who is Billy Graham? Who is Buddha or Hari Krishna or Mohammed? Who is Rick Warren or Benny Hinn? Who is Todd Tomasella? What miracle did any of these people ever do? Where are the nail scars in their hands?

Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?” 1 Corinthaisn 1:13

All these mere men mentioned here have one thing in common – they are mere sinful men with no hope now or for eternity without the grace of Jesus. Many of these mentioned are icons – “idol shepherds” of Satan himself to draw away and intercept your attention and heart’s affections from the only One who came and redeemed your precious soul (Zech. 11:17; diligenly study Colossians 2).

“(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)” Psalms 49:8

The Great Shepherd came to grant you life – Satan’s goal is to rob you of your inheritance that Jesus Christ came and fully paid for. Will you let him? Whom will you serve?

“Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil. And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.” Romans 16:17-20

Who in history other than the very Son of the living God ever foretold his own death, burial and resurrection and then accomplished it? Who shed His sinless blood on your behalf? Who else in history laid down His life, giving His own blood to pay for your sins and bring you into a vital relationship with the Father and purchase Heaven on your behalf? Who? Who? Who?

If Jesus Christ is truly the Supreme being in all the universe, is He not worthy of our exuberant praise and gratitude? Does He merit a moment of verbalized praise and thanksgiving?

“By him (Christ Jesus) therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” Hebrews 13:15

Study Colossians closely.

PRAYER: Holy Father in Heaven, open my eyes to behold the glory of the only begotten of the Father – Jesus Christ the righteous! Teach my heart to discern any religious teaching that does not blatantly elevate Christ as LORD of all and soon coming and sole Head of His true Church (called out ones)! Amen.

Christology-the Divinity of Jesus Christ

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS CONCERNING JESUS CHRIST AS GOD ALMIGHTY: (Note: this is not an exhaustive look at the divinity of Jesus Christ. Also, note that some of the particular words that announce His divinity are underlined).

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (means God with us).” Isaiah 7:14

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end.” Isaiah 9:6, 7

“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. (Jesus, born as a human in Bethlehem, is God, and existed from eternity past.)” Micah 5:2

“In the beginning was the Word (Jesus Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God …All things were made by him (Creator); and without him was not any thing made that was made…He was in the world, and the world was made by him…And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…” John 1:1, 2, 10, 14

“And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.” John 3:13

“Therefore the Jews sought to kill him because he…said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.” John 5:18

“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” John 8:58 (before Abraham, Jesus Christ existed because He is eternal so He has no beginning nor ending. He dwelt with the Father from eternity past.)

“The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man makest thyself God.” John 10:33 The rebellious Jews were actually attempting to stone Jesus for identifying Himself as God Almighty – the “Christ”, “the Son of God” (John 10:24-25, 36). Read John 10:22-42. The Jews knew from the OT Scriptures that the Messiah would be divine, yet were in unbelief that this Jesus from Nazareth was their long awaited Messiah.

“I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.” John 16:28

“And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.” John 17:5

“And Thomas answered and said unto him (Jesus), My Lord and my God.” John 20:28

“…Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.” Philippians 2:5, 6 (Jesus Christ is “equal with God” – on the same level – God Almighty.)

“…God was manifest in the flesh…believed on in the world, received up into glory.” 1 Timothy 3:16

“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: these three are one (there are three distinct, divine Persons in the Godhead and they are ‘one’ in substance and unity).” 1 John 5:7

“…Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.” 1 John 5:20, 21

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:8

SEEING CHRIST in the SCRIPTURES

“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” John 5:39

Or, “Search the scriptures…they are they which testify of me (Jesus).” Here the Son of God is correcting the Jewish leaders of His day. The religious people Jesus was speaking to here knew the law/Word of God, yet vainly thought they could mentally assent to and keep the letter of the law of God without coming to know God Himself – the Person. To this type of heart, He will never reveal himself. They were hardened in heart and didn’t want to repent of their sinfulness which would be a prerequisite for knowing God, who is holy. (Mark 7:1-23; John 15:22, etc.)

A wise man once stated; It is one thing to know the Word of God, it is another thing to know the God of the Word.

God gave to us His Word as a window through which we see Him. (Luke 24:27, 44) He is integrally involved in opening our understanding that we might know Him more intimately:

“Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at *Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” Luke 24:25-27

“And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.” Luke 24:44-45

“Moses,” “the prophets,” and the “Psalms” always refer to the written Word of God, namely the Old Testament Scriptures (Acts 24:14; 26:22; Ephesians 2:20, etc.).

When the Scriptures are opened, Christ is revealed – brought forth into focus on the center stage of our hearts. God is all about opening to us His Word that we might behold a glimpse of Jesus Christ.

Several verses in the New Testament Scriptures reveal that Jesus Christ is the Word of God. (John 1:1, 14; 1:2; Rev. 19:13) Jesus is the Person who is revealed in all the Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation. He is the central Theme of all of Scripture.

Jesus Christ is the revelation of God – the Word of God, that is, God’s expression to man. (John 1:1, 14:9; Heb. 1:1-3). The personhood and nature of God is clearly revealed to us in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ who is “the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person.” (Hebrews 1:3) He chose to reveal Himself to us through words. The Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Word of Life, and has given to us His eternal Word, is the perfect and permanent portrait of God.

“…he that hath seen me hath seen the Father…” John 14:9

May God open our hearts through His Word and by His Spirit, that we might know and love Him supremely. The Psalmist prayed and we should also; “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” (Psalms 119:18)

In Christ Our Lord,

Todd Tomasella
